Preparing for Recitals

Preparing for Recitals

Recitals are an exciting time! Sharing what you have learnt is really fun too!

These are some tips in your preparation for your big day.  You can’t control the environment during the recital, so Maximize your Preparation and prepare everything in advance.

    1. Are you able to play the piece without any breakdowns?
    2. Are you able to memorize the piece?
    3. Have you practiced enough with the accompanist?
    4. Have you had practice performances, wearing your recital clothing and shoes?
    5. Is your instrument in a good condition?
    6. Do you need a tuner, rosin, shoulder rest, chair or stool?
    7. Do you know the performance etiquette- how to bow etc?
    8. Know the venue- Where will you need to sit or wait before, during and after the performance? How will you enter and exit the stage?
    9. Did you double-check the date, time and location of the recital?

Take it easy before the recital

    1. Have your clothes been cleaned, ironed and ready?
    2. Plan ahead for your transportation and traveling time to get to the recital location by the stated assemble time to avoid any traffic disruptions or delays. It is often stressful if you show up late.
    3. Do some warm ups before the performance.

Remember the recital is a celebration.  Even if unexpected things happen, keep going, and do your best to think positively.  Put on a smile, bow and take a picture.

Tip – Taking a deep breath before playing always helps.

You have worked hard, so take this opportunity to show off your hard work and enjoy the performance. All performers, even famous musicians get nervous before they go on stage. But remember that everyone in the audience is on your side and wants to hear you succeed, so have fun and be proud that you are able to make music and give such extraordinary pleasure to others.
